Opened in 1891, Markthalle Neun is one of the 14 market halls that existed in Berlin at the beginning of the 20th century. Today, only four (VI, IX, X, and XI) are still used as markets. However, Neun's journey hasn't been easy: it was hit by a bomb during World War II, and the following decades were marked by the constant threat of closure.
In the early 2000s, Markthalle was put up for sale. Amid protests from local residents, who didn’t want the historic building to be turned into a regular supermarket, it was agreed that the market would only be sold to those who presented a concept focused on small businesses and socio-cultural projects.
And so it was done. Since 2011, Markthalle has provided space for local producers, hosting a weekly market from Tuesday to Thursday (with special offers on Fridays and Saturdays), a restaurant, a canteen, and the famous Street Food Thursday event. The market also serves as a venue for projects and discussions on topics such as food, sustainability, and biodiversity, among others.
