Mauerpark ("Wall Park") gets its name because it was located between East Germany's inner wall and the famous Berlin Wall, which faced West Berlin. This area, known as the "death strip," was lined with barbed wire fences, alarms, and other obstacles, all heavily guarded by armed officers.
Today, instead of watchtowers and fences, Mauerpark features a basketball court, a playground, street musicians, and a large green space for recreation. However, part of the inner wall still stands, now covered in graffiti by local artists.
On Sundays, the park hosts one of Berlin’s largest flea markets, offering artwork and antiques, particularly from East Germany’s past. Also on Sundays (except in winter), at 3 PM, the famous karaoke session takes place, where brave participants take the stage in the amphitheater—usually packed with spectators.
