Located in Charlemont House (1763), the Dublin City Gallery The Hugh Lane was established by Hugh Lane in 1908, when it was still called Dublin’s Municipal Gallery of Modern Art. It is the world’s first recorded modern art gallery and was later renamed after its founder.

The gallery is open every day except Mondays. Admission is always free, and in addition to permanent and temporary exhibitions, you can also enjoy a concert on Sundays at 12 PM (they only ask for a small donation).

However, the most fascinating aspect of the Hugh Lane is Francis Bacon's studio. Acquired by the gallery in 1998 and opened to the public in 2001, the studio and its more than seven thousand objects – including the dust! – were cataloged and transferred from London to Dublin, where the famous artist was born.
