The Poolbeg Lighthouse was built in 1768, but its current shape dates back to 1820. It is located at the end of the South Wall, a 4 km breakwater that extends from the Poolbeg Peninsula into Dublin Bay. Don’t expect to see a giant wall, as this is an underwater fortification, but you can count on beautiful views.
Especially on sunny days, the walk to the lighthouse is well worth it. The most scenic route is through Sean O’Casey Park, following the coastline to the lighthouse. However, here’s a tip: rent a bike, as it’s an 8 km round trip. Alternatively, you can drive to the lighthouse parking lot and complete the last 1.5 km on foot.

No matter how you get there, remember to stop and enjoy the scenery. The area is peaceful, and it’s likely that you’ll only encounter a few fishermen. Turn around and see Dublin and Dún Laoghaire to the south, the North Bull Lighthouse (green) to the west, and, if you’re lucky, cruise ships departing. It’s hard to believe you’re just a few kilometers away from downtown Dublin.
