Russians love sweets. And during the Soviet era, especially on colder days, there was nothing better than having something warm to drink and enjoying a “pyschka” (or “ponchik” in Moscow). This fried doughnut sprinkled with powdered sugar remains a beloved treat among St. Petersburg residents to this day.

Operating since 1958, the Pyschechnaya (Пышечная) on Bolshaya Konyushennaya Street is one of the oldest still in business. The place hasn’t changed much, maintaining the atmosphere of a Soviet-era canteen, including the long lines. On the bright side, prices are very low, and service tends to be quick.

Another popular spot where you can try these famous doughnuts is Pyshki Petersburg. Here, pyschkas come with various toppings, such as condensed milk and honey. The atmosphere is more modern, and the classic pyschka is just slightly more expensive.
